INTRODUCTION ACAMPROL 333MG contain acamprosate calcium which belongs to a group of medicine called alcohol abstinence aids. It is used to treat alcohol dependence. It helps to maintain abstinence in alcohol-dependent patients. This medicine which acts on the central nervous system (brain and the spinal cord). This medicine in combination with counselling will help you to not drink alcohol. It does this by acting on the chemical changes that have taken place in the brain during the years that you have been drinking alcohol. It does not prevent the harmful effects of continuous alcohol abuse. The common side effects are diarrhoea, stomachache, nausea, vomiting, excessive gas in the stomach or bowel (flatulence), itching or spotty red skin rash, decreased sexual desire (libido), impotence, frigidity. This medicine is strictly not recommended for use in patient below the age 18 years or above the age 65 years. Before taking this medicine tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney disease, heart disease, liver problems. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medicine. DIRECTIONS FOR USE Always take ACAMPROL 333MG exactly as your doctor has told you. This medicine must be taken with food. Try to take ACAMPROL 333MG at the same time each day. It should be swallowed whole with water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. SIDE EFFECTS OF ACAMPROL 333MG SERIOUS Severe allergic reaction such as angio-oedema (causing large, raised marks on the skin and localised swelling, including the face and throat) or anaphylaxis (causing difficulty in breathing with rash, swelling, wheezing, and feeling faint) COMMON Diarrhoea Stomachache Nausea, vomiting Excessive gas in the stomach or bowel (flatulence) Itching or spotty red skin rash Decreased sexual desire (libido) Impotence Frigidity HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS Diarrhoea: Drink lot of fluid such as water or squash, to avoid dehydration. Do not take any other medicines without talking to a doctor. Stomachache: Try to rest and relax. You can eat and drink slowly or have smaller and frequent meals. Applying heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach. If still pain persists, speak to your doctor. Nausea and vomiting: Try taking this medicine with, or just after, a meal or snack and stick to simple meals and do not eat rich or spicy food. Flatulence: Eat slowly and avoid soda and other carbonated beverages. Chew your food thoroughly before you swallow. Itching: Apply a cold, wet cloth, or ice pack on the itching area. Take an oatmeal bath. Moisturize your skin. Apply cooling agents such as menthol or calamine.
