Description This piece is part of my Lake Michigan ceramic art — handmade porcelain pottery shaped by shoreline light, sand, and water. This hand-coiled porcelain demijohn vase is a one-of-a-kind ceramic vessel inspired by the shifting waves and shoreline textures of Lake Michigan. This vase was slowly hand built using quarter-inch thick porcelain coils, the form carries quiet strength—marks of a process that values time, touch, and intention. After forming, the surface was decorated with Lake Michigan beach wave patterns, echoing the rhythm of water meeting the shore. The exterior is finished with a custom glaze made from locally gathered Lake Michigan beach sand, layered with a soft creamy butterscotch glaze. During firing, the sand melts and interacts with the porcelain, creating natural variations in color, texture, and depth—no two areas are exactly alike. Demijohns historically served as large utilitarian vessels for storing wine, water, or oil. This contemporary ceramic interpretation honors that tradition while shifting the form into a sculptural, functional art object. This vase stands beautifully on its own and can also hold dried botanicals or branches.  It is water tight. This piece reflects a deep connection to place and process—made slowly, with materials drawn directly from the lakeshore, resulting in a vessel that carries both landscape and memory.
